‘Eb & Flo’s Steam Bar:
Casual Dining on the Water

by Joyce Deaton
(Recipe for Lowcountry Boil at end)

Looking for a casual seafood spot you can go to by boat? Head for the Bald Head Island Marina, where Eb & Flo’s Steam Bar serves up boiled and fried seafood in an outdoor pavilion overlooking the river, ocean and marshes.

Named one of Coastal Living magazine’s “favorite seafood dives,” Eb & Flo’s is best known for the Carolina Bucket, an individual-size low-country boil. The bucket includes shrimp, clams, oysters, snow crab, Kielbasa sausage, corn and potatoes served with corn muffins.

In a decidedly casual atmosphere, executive chef Matt Karas creates out-of-the-ordinary appetizers such as Shrimp Jammers (jumbo shrimp stuffed with jalapeno peppers and cheddar), calamari, fried soft shell crab and seafood chowder. A wide range of sandwiches includes steak burgers, shrimp burgers, barbecue and tuna salad. Entrees include seafood platters, steamed oysters, clams, crab legs and rib eye. For dessert, there’s key lime pie and cheesecake.

Casual dining at 'Eb & Flo'sAn indoor lounge with big-screen TV accommodates sports fans, while others enjoy the outdoor dining pavilion where special events take place just about every night. There’s live entertainment on weekends and special occasions, and cookouts, crawfish boils and barbecue picnics make guests feel like family.

Eb & Flo’s is located just at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, two miles east of ICW marker 307 near Cape Fear channel buoy 13A. The marina has a lighted entry channel with 7-foot draft.

Coordinates are 33°52' North and 38°00' West. For the best view, arrive at Eb & Flo’s west-facing pavilion before sunset, settle in and watch nature’s most spectacular and longest-running show.

Lowcountry Boil
(Serves 12)

4 pounds small red potatoes
5 quarts water
1 (3-ounce) bag of crab boil seasoning
4 tablespoons Old Bay seasoning
2 pounds kielbasa or hot smoked link sausage, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces
6 ears of corn, halved
4 pounds large fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined optional
Cocktail sauce

Add potatoes to large pot, then add 5 quarts water and seasonings. Cover pot and heat to a rolling boil; cook 5 minutes. Add sausage and corn, and return to a boil. Cook 10 minutes or until potatoes are tender.

Add shrimp to stockpot; cook 3 to 4 minutes or until shrimp turn pink. Drain. Serve with cocktail sauce.
